Thomas Nozkowski Remembered by 21 Artists and Critics in Artcritical Archive
Editor David Cohen led a remembrance of the late painter Thomas Nozkowski, attended by twenty-one artists, critics, and friends. A solo exhibition titled "Exploring Possibilities" was showcased at Cheim & Read. At VOLTA, BravinLee Projects featured a comprehensive survey celebrating three decades of writing about the abstract master, referred to as a "hub." Nozkowski regarded Jane Freilicher as his ideal artist. Annually, the American Academy of Arts and Letters recognizes 50 creators—composers, artists, architects, and writers—with cash prizes between $5,000 and $75,000, announced during a private ceremony on May 16, 2010. Four Honorary Members were also welcomed into the Academy. Nozkowski's latest exhibition at Pace, showcasing his finest work, faced some critique, and a rebuttal was provided to Cohen's previous review. Reeves was acknowledged for humanizing abstraction, while the act of pouring paint was debated regarding its liberation from art historical limitations.
