Thomas Hirschhorn's Gramsci Monument Engages Bronx Community Through Public Art
The Gramsci Monument by Thomas Hirschhorn, organized by the Dia Art Foundation, is a temporary exhibit located at the Forest Houses in the Bronx, New York, and will be available until September 15, 2013. Constructed from inexpensive materials, the installation features a pavilion that houses a bar, exhibition area, library, theatre, workshop, classroom, newspaper, computer room, and radio station, all managed by local residents. Hirschhorn, who is present for the duration of the project, prioritizes energy over quality. The initiative includes lectures, workshops, performances, and art classes. This marks the fourth installment in Hirschhorn's tribute to dissident thinkers, addressing modern issues such as race and gun violence, especially in light of George Zimmerman's acquittal in the Trayvon Martin case, with the goal of encouraging community involvement and intellectual discourse.
