Thomas Braida's Functional Sculptures at Le Dictateur

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Thomas Braida (Gorizia, 1982) presents a new series of functional ceramic sculptures at Le Dictateur, an independent space in Milan that blurs disciplinary boundaries. Curated by Caroline Corbetta, the exhibition 'La bava sul cuscino' opens on April 6 during the Art Night of Miart week and runs until April 14, the closing day of Salone del Mobile. The title references Braida's description of his works as 'objects stolen from my paintings, from our R.E.M. phases, those that leave drool on the pillow.' The show includes sculptural objects with various functions—pitchers, paperweights, lamps, egg cups—presented within an environmental installation featuring paintings, wallpapers, carpets, and furniture. Braida's inspiration comes from still life and dreams, shaping imaginary objects as if alive. The works are functional but secondary to their artistic value, with form preceding function, reversing the design process. Braida began working with ceramics years ago in Friuli, learning from his father, a sculptor and painter. The exhibition aims to create a parallel world where visitors physically enter a still life or dream, reminiscent of animated objects in 'Beauty and the Beast.' Corbetta emphasizes the importance of encouraging artists to explore new territories beyond established linguistic boundaries, challenging hierarchies between art and craftsmanship.
