Third Moscow Biennale Critiqued as Disorganized International Survey

opinion-review · 2026-04-19

The 3rd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art took place from September 24 to October 23, 2009, at the Garage, Center for Contemporary Culture, under the curation of Jean-Hubert Martin. The event presented approximately 80 artists, such as Anish Kapoor, El Anatsui, and Alexander Brodsky, centered around the theme "Against Exclusions," featuring artworks from Australia, Africa, and India. While some critics pointed out the chaotic presentation and the recycled feel of several pieces, Dmitry Tsvetkov's installation Ice Age drew inspiration from Bruegel, and Stas Volazlovsky along with Alexander Lobanov infused political elements into their works. Ravinder G. Reddy showcased a gilded head of an Indian goddess. Despite the critiques, the biennale successfully engaged younger audiences, with some labeling it "MALLticulturalism." David Riff referred to it as a tribute to the enchanting aspects of art.
