Thinking Hands: Noorderlicht Explores Embodied Knowledge in Groningen

From September 12 to November 1, 2026, Noorderlicht will host "Thinking Hands," an exhibition exploring the concept of physical memory in our digital era at THEA, a newly established art venue located in the old Niemeyer tobacco factory in Groningen. This exhibition features a blend of photography, video, and installations that focus on the expertise conveyed through our hands, bodies, and movements. It acts as a precursor to the Noorderlicht Biennale PLAY, set for Summer 2027. Drawing inspiration from Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa's idea of "the thinking hand," the show emphasizes how our bodies often possess knowledge ahead of our minds, prompting reflection on what our physical selves retain as technology increasingly takes over decision-making.
