Thessaloniki Biennale 2009: Art in Times of Uncertainty

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The second Thessaloniki Biennale, titled 'Praxis: Art In Times of Uncertainty,' took place from May 24 to September 27, 2009, across multiple venues in Thessaloniki, Greece. Curated by Bisi Silva, Gabriela Salgado, and Syrago Tsiara, the biennale anchored its discourse on Terry Eagleton's book 'After Theory' (Basic Books, New York, 2003). This choice shifted focus from proclaiming the death of theory to redefining its goals and research fields, placing the artwork itself at the center rather than treating it as a mere example of theoretical application. The first edition had been guided by Michel Foucault's thought. A review by Cécilia Bezzan appeared in art press no. 359 (September 2009).
