Thermocene: Sound Installation Born in Two High-Altitude Bivouacs in Val Susa
The multimedia project Thermocene, by Mybosswas (Giorgio Ferrero and Rodolfo Mongitore) and EX studio (Andrea Cassi and Michele Versaci), combines sound and video to demonstrate that human impact on nature is never zero. The installation was created inside two design bivouacs at over 2,800 meters in Val Susa: the Bivacco Corradini (2,908 m, 2019) and the Bivacco Berrone (2,850 m, 2023). Ferrero and Mongitore spent fifteen days and nights last October collecting audio traces—radio signals (Radio Maria, Radio China International), TV, rescue and military communications—and measuring fine particulate matter, all incorporated into an electronic composition between noise and ambient. The work is currently on view in Turin: at Gallerie d'Italia until March 30 (dual-channel video installation, with a live performance by Mybosswas on March 28), and at Antiche Ghiacciaie del Mercato Centrale until March 23 (immersive sound installation curated by Arteco). From June 7 to September 14, it will be presented at GAMeC – Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, linking to the museum's collaboration with the Bergamo section of the Italian Alpine Club for the renovation of the Bivacco Aldo Frattini, which will serve as a base for environmental monitoring. A preview of the documentary film produced by KINO Produzioni will be shown at CPH:FORUM 2025 in Copenhagen (March 24-27). A book and a documentary film are planned for 2026.
