Nicolas Donin and Laurent Feneyrou are at the helm of the two-volume release titled 'Théories de la composition musicale au 20e siècle' published by Symétrie. This extensive work features nearly 70 contributions spanning over 1800 pages, delving into the intricate relationship between theory and practice in 20th-century music, covering figures from Schoenberg to Grisey, Webern to Lachenmann, and movements from Dada to Fluxus. The editors clarify that their methodology differs from anthologies like those by Charles Harrison and Paul Wood, focusing on critical syntheses rather than mere text selection. The collection includes lesser-known writings to avoid a simplistic portrayal of a few 'creator-theorists'. It highlights the pioneering role of American composers prior to Cage, reassesses the synchronization of music history with art history, and discusses Stockhausen's influence and technological advancements. Theory is framed as a 'higher praxis' intertwined with the work itself, rather than as detached speculation. Over eight years, around sixty authors contributed to this project.
