Theodoros Terzopoulos stages Beckett's Waiting for Godot in Naples

Greek director Theodoros Terzopoulos, founder of Attis Theatre in Delphi (1985), has created a new production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, co-produced by ERT and Fondazione Teatro di Napoli – Teatro Bellini. Terzopoulos, known for his methodical actor training and tragic repertoire, also designed sets, lights, and costumes. The staging replaces Beckett's barren tree with a withered bonsai and uses a black cubic structure that opens to reveal characters. The cast includes Stefano Randisi (Vladimir), Enzo Vetrano (Estragon), Paolo Musio (Pozzo), Giulio Germano Cervi (Lucky), and Rocco Ancarola (the boy). The production incorporates symbolic props—bloody knives, boots, a wooden cross, open books covered in blood—and a soundscape of religious music and catastrophic noises. Terzopoulos avoids imposing a single interpretation, instead foregrounding the play's ambiguity: the protagonists may already be dead, Lucky and Pozzo may be figments of their imagination, and the boy from Godot may be a mirage. The director frames the entire play as a device to pass time while awaiting the next tragic war. The production runs at Teatro Bellini in Naples.
