Théodore Strawinsky's First Italian Retrospective in 40 Years

exhibition · 2026-05-04

After nearly four decades, the work of Théodore Strawinsky returns to Italy with the exhibition 'La Trasfigurazione Poetica' in Domodossola. Born in 1907 in Saint Petersburg to the famous composer Igor Stravinsky, Théodore showed early artistic talent. He was advised by Pablo Picasso to study at the Louvre and learned fundamentals from André Derain. Georges Braque called him 'very talented.' The exhibition is divided into sections: landscape, still life, portrait, nude, and preparatory drawings for the Gethsemane sanctuary. His style blends classical tradition with Cubist influences from his mentors, opposing cold conceptualism and abstraction. A catalog published by Sagep Editori includes critical texts by curator Carole Haensler Huguet, art historian Philippe Lüsher, and conservator Sylvie Visinand of the Fondation Théodore Strawinsky.
