Thelma Golden honored with 2016 Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence

The Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence for 2016 has been awarded to Thelma Golden, who serves as the director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem. She will receive a prize of $25,000 along with an award crafted by artist Lawrence Weiner, inspired by his 2006 work Bard Enter, initially made for the Hessel Museum of Art's entrance at CCS Bard. Golden has been at the helm of the Studio Museum for 11 years, curating significant exhibitions such as Chris Ofili: Afro Muses 1995-2005 and Gordon Parks: A Harlem Family 1967. Before joining the Studio Museum, she was part of the Whitney Museum's curatorial team from 1988 to 1998, contributing to the 1993 Biennial and the 1994 exhibition Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in American Art.
