Theatre director and playwright Peter Gill dies at 86

Peter Gill, a prominent theatre director, playwright, and actor hailing from Cardiff, passed away at the age of 86. Known for his performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he also featured in films such as Zulu and HMS Defiant. A key figure in British theatre, Gill was closely linked with the Royal Court in London, where he brought D.H. Lawrence's plays to the stage and showcased his own creations. He took on the role of associate director in 1970 and became the artistic director of Riverside Studios in 1976, launching it with a production of As You Like It. He adapted Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, enhancing the theatre's reputation. Honored with an OBE in 1980, he established the National Theatre Studio in 1984. Tributes poured in from Michael Grandage and Luke Evans. Gill was born on 7 September 1939 and took pride in his Welsh roots.
