Theater Oficina Stages Flávio de Carvalho's 1933 Play at Sesc Pompeia

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From January 26 to 29, 'O Bailado do Deus Morto' will be presented at Sesc Pompeia, directed by Marcelo Drummond in collaboration with Teatro Oficina. This performance wraps up the 'Flávio de Carvalho Experimental' exhibition, which has been curated by Kiki Mazzucchelli and Pollyana Quintella. Written by Flávio de Carvalho in 1933 for his Teatro da Experiência, the play includes Black musicians from the samba school Vai-Vai wearing aluminum masks. After censorship led to the closure of Teatro da Experiência, Teatro Oficina has revived the piece several times, including during the 29th Bienal de São Paulo and in 2020. The latest rendition features slight modifications from the previous year, merging theater and dance with vibrant movements, which Drummond refers to as a 'mini-opera' highlighting modern aesthetics.
