The Way We Are 5.0: Weserburg Museum's Living Collection Presentation

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst in Bremen has opened the fifth iteration of its collection exhibition The Way We Are, featuring over 120 works from 100 artists and groups spanning the 1960s to today across 2,500 square meters. Thematic areas address political landscapes, images of Germany, love clichés, gender and cultural identities, (post-)colonialism, painting concepts, and the vertical form. Co-curator Janneke de Vries noted that since the format's 2019 launch, the number of collaborating collections has doubled, affirming the museum's future as a collectors' museum. Highlights include bird sounds in the elevator, a deconstruction of Hollywood love tropes, spatial drawings on strings, and works by over 100 artists such as Kader Attia, Francis Alÿs, Miriam Cahn, and Andy Warhol. The exhibition is complemented by an art bar—a former film set by Mel Chin and GALA Committee—and an artist space by Jonathan Monk. A space honoring Bremen painter Norbert Schwontkowski, on the tenth anniversary of his death, showcases his graphic oeuvre alongside works by Andreas Slominski. The Way We Are is a living collection presentation that will now undergo continuous smaller alterations instead of annual overhauls, ensuring constant public access and fresh experiences. It draws loans from over thirty international private and corporate collections, plus works from the museum's own holdings. Curated by Ingo Clauß and Janneke de Vries.
