The Tragic Fates of Joseph Stalin's Children

other · 2026-05-17

Joseph Stalin's children endured tragic lives shaped by his brutal rule. His eldest, Yakov Dzhugashvili (born 1907), was captured by Germans in WWII and died in Sachsenhausen in 1943. Adopted son Artyom Sergeyev (1921-2008) had a military career. Vasily Stalin (1921-1962) became an alcoholic after his mother's suicide and died in disgrace. Svetlana Alliluyeva (1926-2011) defected to the US in 1967, wrote memoirs, and died in Wisconsin. Alleged illegitimate children include Alexander Davydov (born 1916) and Konstantin Kuzakov (1911-1996), who claimed Stalin helped him enter university.
