The Torlonia Marbles: Collecting Masterpieces Exhibition in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition 'The Torlonia Marbles. Collecting Masterpieces' will be held from October 14, 2020 to June 29, 2021 at Villa Caffarelli in Rome. Curated by Salvatore Settis and Carlo Gasparri, the show features 96 works from the Torlonia collection, one of the world's most important private collections of classical art. The exhibition traces the history of private collecting from the 15th century onward, highlighting how collections led to the formation of public museums. The display design is by David Chipperfield Architects Milano. Bvlgari sponsored the restoration of the marbles. The project aims to eventually establish a permanent Museo Torlonia in Rome, with the show traveling internationally first. The collection was assembled in the early 19th century by Prince Alessandro Torlonia, who acquired the Albani collection in 1866. The Fondazione Torlonia, established in 2014, is collaborating with the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. Minister Dario Franceschini praised the public-private partnership. The exhibition will occupy five rooms in Palazzo Caffarelli, reopening after renovations, and will present works chronologically from the 19th century back to the 16th century.
