The Substation exhibition explores disciplinary architecture through punk interventions and immersive installations
Discipline the City at The Substation in Singapore ran from 23 August to 26 November 2017, examining how architectural elements shape human behavior. The exhibition featured three distinct acts with rotating artworks and punk residents. Physical alterations to the building included new passageways hacked through walls, anti-homeless floor studs, and a narrow 'fat-shaming' corridor. Artist Debbie Ding's A Brief History of the Trap Door (2017) guided visitors through the normally restricted basement. Chen Sai Hua Kuan's Something Nothing (2017) created an immersive void-like experience through clever lighting in a right-angled tunnel. Stevphen Shukaitis's installation Stop the City... Revisited (2017) referenced 1983-84 London financial district protests with graffiti-covered walls. Kuang-Yu Tsui's video Invisible City: Liverpool Top 9 (2006) satirically reimagined hostile urban design as civic improvements. The punk residency program emerged from discussions following Alan Oei's controversial appointment as artistic director, with residents receiving stipends while maintaining detailed timesheets under video surveillance. Act I resident Angjingsial produced agitprop graffiti in a punk aesthetic. The exhibition connected disciplinary architecture to Singapore's punk community persistence against hostile authorities and anticipated smart city surveillance possibilities.
