The Square Wins Palme d'Or at 70th Cannes Film Festival

The 70th Cannes Film Festival concluded with Ruben Östlund's 'The Square' winning the Palme d'Or. The festival featured strong Italian cinema presence, including 'A Ciambra' by Carpignano, 'Dopo la guerra' by Annarita Zambrano, 'Cuori puri' by Roberto De Paolis, and 'Fortunata' by Sergio Castellitto, with Jasmine Trinca winning Best Actress in Un Certain Regard. Other awards included the Grand Prix to '120 Battiti al minuto' by Robin Campillo, Best Director to Sofia Coppola for 'The Beguiled', Best Actor to Joaquin Phoenix for 'You Were Never Really Here', and Best Actress to Diane Kruger for 'In the Fade'. The Ecumenical Jury prize went to Naomi Kawase's 'Hikari'. The festival was noted for its lack of magic in the Official Selection and strict security checks. The Venice Film Festival lineup is expected at the end of July.
