The Shed's Open Call selects 52 emerging NYC artists for 2019 debut
The Shed, a new cultural institution in New York City designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, has selected 52 emerging artists through its Open Call competition. The museum's flexible structure features a movable outer shell that can slide on rails to create an additional covered space for performances. Over 900 applications were received in three months. Selected artists will receive stipends between $7,000 and $15,000, plus support and resources. Their commissioned works will be presented in the Black-box Theatre, Gallery I (over 1,000 square meters), and the 1,500-square-meter plaza. Three consecutive programs begin in spring 2019, with a fourth in 2020. Tamara McCaw, Chief Civic Program Officer, stated the initiative aims to support local emerging artists and engage diverse NYC communities.
