The Room Gallery Reopens in Rome with a Street-Facing Window Concept
The Room Gallery, originally founded in Rome in 2011 by London-born photographer Kevin Pineda, is reopening after closing in 2013. The gallery first launched as a hybrid bar-gallery space on Via Cairoli, near Piazza Vittorio and in the heart of Chinatown, spanning six rooms that became a hub for artists and creatives across disciplines including art, design, architecture, photography, and music. After closing, its spirit continued through The Room Studios at Via Acaia 81, near Re di Roma. Now Pineda is relaunching The Room Gallery with a renewed focus on scouting Italian and international artists. The new concept features a street-facing window display that changes monthly, starting in July 2017 with works by Lorenzo Fontanesi (Milan), Michele Spina (Rome), Makoto (Japan), Hannes Uhlenhaut (Leipzig), and Saverio Magistri (Sicily). Pineda aims to eventually move the gallery to central Rome. Currently, The Room Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition of Maria Koshenkova, a Russian artist based in Copenhagen, running until January 30, featuring glass sculptures that combine glass and fur to address sustainable protection of environment and life in Iceland and Greenland. Koshenkova previously had a solo show at the Aasiaat Museum in Greenland in 2017. Artists selected by Pineda stay in Rome for two weeks before the opening as part of a residency program.
