The Road to Palmyra: Danish Museum to Exhibit Largest Collection of Palmyra Artifacts Outside Syria

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen will host "The Road to Palmyra" from September 20, 2019 to March 1, 2020, the first exhibition in Denmark dedicated to the culture of the ancient oasis city of Palmyra, which was attacked by ISIS and has suffered eight years of war in Syria. The exhibition marks the return of the museum's ancient Syrian tomb sculptures from a loan to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, where they had been since 2018. The Glyptotek holds the largest collection of archaeological artifacts from Palmyra outside of Syria, including over 100 portrait sculptures that are a distinctive feature of the city's cultural monuments. The exhibition focuses on the first three centuries BC, when Palmyra played a significant local, regional, and global role. It is curated by Anne Marie Nielsen, curator of Greek and Roman art at the Glyptotek. Museum director Christine Buhl Andersen expressed pleasure in welcoming the collection back and offering visitors a unique insight into Palmyra's history. The museum was founded from the private collection of Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914), an industrialist from the Carlsberg brewery family.
