The Rise of Librism and Avant-Garde Movements in Congolese Art from the 1970s to 2000s

publication · 2026-04-20

In the late 1990s, a transformative movement in Congolese art emerged with the establishment of the Librist Group by Germain Kapend, Francis Mampuya, and Eddy Masumbuku in Kinshasa. This group succeeded the Free Exhibition Group, which was founded in June 1996 and rebranded in October 1997, as it turned away from traditional academic norms. Earlier, in 1974, the Groupe des Avant-Gardistes Congolais was formed but splintered into Neonegrism and Neorupestrism by 1975. After 1978, contemporary popular painting gained traction, highlighted by artists such as Chéri Samba. The Botembe workshops, operational since 1992, delved into African symbolism. Significant milestones included the 'Emergence 2001–2002' festival. Célestin Badibanga Ne Mwine's essay, published on January 29, 2024, chronicles these changes.
