The Proliferation of Design Weeks Across Italy and Beyond

The Milan Fuorisalone, once the sole international design week, has inspired a proliferation of similar events across Italy and globally. In Italy, design weeks have emerged in cities such as Bologna, Florence, Pordenone, Forte dei Marmi, Lecce, Ancona, Urbino, Palermo, Turin, Venice, Matera, and notably in Milan's hinterland: Varese, Monza, and Brescia. These events aim to highlight local identities and leverage design as a tool for territorial marketing and innovation. Paolo Casati of Studiolabo attributes this growth to design's shift from industrial identity to a more accessible and inclusive format. The Catanzaro Design Week (CDW), founded by Giuseppe Anania and Domenico Garofalo, focuses on bridging ideation and production, promoting independent design and local craftsmanship to create a 'Calabria product.' In Rome, Antonia Marmo is launching a design week in 2018 centered on atmosphere and stories rather than product, featuring site-specific installations in historic palaces and galleries. Internationally, the World Design Week network, launched in 2017 and presented at Triennale Milano, connects Helsinki, Eindhoven, Mexico City, Seoul, San Francisco, Toronto, Barcelona, and Beijing (which had 5 million visitors in 2016). The network aims to unite global design communities, with representatives meeting in Helsinki in September 2017.
