The Play's First French Monographic Exhibition at Salle Principale

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The Play, a Japanese collective established in 1967 in Kansai, is presenting its inaugural monographic exhibition in France at Galerie Salle Principale in Paris. Curated by Yoann Gourmel and Élodie Royer, the show was initially scheduled to continue until November 14, 2020. It highlights performances spanning from 1969 to 1988, emphasizing themes of territorial movement and existence. Following a retrospective at the National Museum of Art, Osaka (2016–2017) and participation in the 2017 Venice Biennale, the exhibition includes various documents—such as drawings, plans, posters, photographs, and videos—set within a space inspired by the 1983 installation Kalejdoskop. The collective had previously showcased work at the 1986 Centre Pompidou and in Plateau-Frac Île-de-France exhibitions from 2011 to 2012.
