The Pitt's DP Reveals Scrubs-Wearing Crew and Custom Lighting for Real-Time ER Drama
Johanna Coelho, director of photography for HBO Max's The Pitt, detailed the innovative filming logistics behind the real-time emergency room series in an interview with PetaPixel. To maintain immersion, the crew wore hospital scrubs to blend into reflections from glass doors and windows. Custom onboard camera lights and 3D-printed diffusion frames were used to avoid floor-based lighting equipment. Production designer Nina Ruscio built the set before scripts were written, allowing writers to align storylines with the physical layout. Over 50 shades of white paint were tested to flatter diverse skin tones. Coelho used Arri Alexa Mini LF cameras with Angenieux lenses for shallow depth of field and mobility. Each episode represents one hour in the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center's ER, with multiple takes per scene to perfect choreography. Coelho worked with executive producer John Wells to develop the visual language. The Pitt is streaming now on HBO Max.
