The Painting Center Relocates to Chelsea with New Exhibition Program

The Painting Center has moved from its 16-year SoHo location to a new Chelsea space at 547 West 27th Street, 5th Floor, New York. Its inaugural exhibition, Continuing Color Abstraction, opens April 13 and is curated by Rella Stuart-Hunt. The center previously operated at 52 Greene Street in SoHo, where it hosted numerous shows including a September 2005 exhibition featuring Emily Berger and Iona Kleinhaut. In February 2004, the gallery presented work exploring painting's enduring relevance. A February 2011 exhibition included Simon Carr, Stanley Lewis, Thaddeus Radell, and Deborah Rosenthal. Critic Joe Walentini reviewed the September 2005 shows, noting a shared painterly approach to abstraction among three distinct artists. The center's programming has consistently focused on abstract painting, with exhibitions like Ying Li's show in 2005 and Phillis Ideal: Recent Paintings. Prices for works have ranged from $1,800 to $4,000. The relocation marks a significant institutional shift for the long-running exhibition space dedicated to painting.
