The Painting Center relocates to Chelsea after 16 years in SoHo

institutional · 2026-04-22

The Painting Center has relocated from SoHo to Chelsea, now situated at 547 West 27th Street on the 5th Floor. Its first exhibition, Continuing Color Abstraction, will debut on April 13, curated by Rella Stuart-Hunt in the main gallery, alongside Phillis Ideal: Recent Paintings in the Project Room. Established in 1993 by a group of 12 painters, this 501(c)3 non-profit organization conducts around 20 exhibitions each year, focusing on emerging, mid-career, and under-represented artists. Rising rents at the former site prompted the Board of Advisors to find a more favorable venue. The new location features esteemed galleries like Cheim & Read and Sundaram Tagore Gallery, inspiring members and the Advisory Board to expand outreach and educational efforts while continuing to celebrate painting in all its variations.
