The National 4 Biennial Showcases 48 Projects Across Four Sydney Institutions Through July 23

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The National 4: Australian Art Now showcases 48 projects from more than 80 artists across four venues in Sydney: Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), Carriageworks, and Campbelltown Arts Centre (CAC). This exhibition, curated by Beatrice Gralton, Emily Rolfe, Freja Carmichael, Aarna Fitzgerald Hanley, and Jane Devery, will be on display until July 23. In contrast to Melbourne Now, it takes a more subdued approach, lacking a central theme while addressing issues such as colonization, migration, ecological decline, and First Nations sovereignty. Featured pieces include Allison Chhorn's Skin Shade Night Day (2022), Shivanjani Lal's Aise Aise Hai (2023), and Naminapu Maymuru-White's Milngiyawuy – Celestial River (2021), highlighting connections within the diasporic and Pacific regions.
