The Museum of Selfies Opens in Glendale, Los Angeles

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Museum of Selfies, a pop-up exhibition dedicated to the selfie phenomenon, will open on April 1 and run through May 31 at 211 N Brand Boulevard in Glendale, Los Angeles County. Co-founded by Tommy Honton and Tair Mamedov, the 744-square-meter space in a shopping mall will feature sections on the history of selfies—from prehistoric times to Jacqueline Kennedy—a gallery of undisclosed artists' works on mass culture, an interactive area for visitors to take and share selfies, and a wall memorializing those who died in selfie-related accidents. Tickets are $25, available only online to manage crowd flow. Honton stated, 'People no longer want to silently consume art; they want to be part of it.' The museum is planned as a traveling exhibition, following the model of the Ice Cream Museum, which started in New York in 2016 and toured San Francisco, Miami, and Los Angeles. The Ice Cream Museum charges $38 and encourages selfies with #moic. Similarly, San Francisco's Color Factory features works by multiple artists and a ball pit. In Rome, the Chiostro del Bramante has hosted interactive social media-friendly exhibitions curated by Danilo Eccher, including 'Love' (2016) and 'Enjoy,' with a third chapter forthcoming.
