The Merchant House's 'Fragments' Explores Art in Domestic Spaces

exhibition · 2026-05-11

The Merchant House (TMH) in Amsterdam presents its summer exhibition 'Fragments,' running concurrently with the theme 'The Merchant House / Your House.' The show examines how artworks transition between public and private spaces, from gallery to home. Featuring works by TMH artists Pino Pinelli (1938–2024), Elsa Tomkowiak (b. 1981), Zhu Hong (b. 1975), Sylvie Bonnot (b. 1982), and André Stempfel (b. 1930), the exhibition engages with the architectural legacy of the Amsterdam canal house, domestic decor, and TMH's programming history. Inspired by Pinelli's signature series, the works blur the line between painting and sculpture, unfolding across walls in small, color-saturated units. The walls become a site of free play, inviting viewers to touch the works, as Pinelli suggested.
