The Measured Garden at Potter Museum Explores Plant Science and Art

At the University of Melbourne, the Potter Museum of Art showcases 'The Measured Garden', an exhibition that intertwines art with science, exploring humanity's efforts to comprehend and manipulate nature. Curated by Julia Murphy, the display includes works from resident artists Keg de Souza and Francis Carmody, along with archival photography and materials from the Burnley campus. De Souza’s piece, 'Garden of Strategies', features pressed specimens from 128 plant species intended for the future Laak Boorndap rooftop garden, merging scientific and cultural stories. Carmody’s 'Compressions' utilizes data visualizations from plant trials conducted by Associate Professor Claire Farrell and Dr. Dean Schrieke, in partnership with Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co). The exhibition, which emphasizes a Eurocentric horticultural history through magic lantern slides and botanical illustrations, is open until 5 September 2026, with free admission.
