Il movimento artistico dell'area è iniziato con The Real Estate Show nel 1980, che ha protestato contro la gentrificazione al 125 di Delancey Street, aprendo la strada ad ABC No Rio al 156 di Rivington Street. I proprietari vari e le infrastrutture del quartiere favoriscono un'arte socialmente consapevole. Tappe significative includono l'istituzione del New Museum nel 2007 e il trasferimento di Lehmann Maupin al 201 di Chrystie Street nello stesso anno. Accanto a queste, sono emersi spazi alternativi come Participant Inc. (2002) e la galleria Canada, fondata da Grauer, Braman, Whitney e Brewer, insieme a Reena Spaulings Fine Art (2004) e Orchard (2005). Recentemente, la galleria Untitled di Joel Mesler si è trasferita al 30 di Orchard a causa della gentrificazione, ma l'area continua a prosperare.
