The Left Hand Cocktail's Origins and Debate Over Its Originality as a Neo-Classic

Sam Ross created the Left Hand cocktail in 2006 while working at Milk & Honey in New York City, inspired by Bitterman's Mole Bitters to blend elements of a Negroni and Manhattan. Using bourbon, sweet vermouth, Campari, and chocolate bitters, he named it after the Al Pacino character 'Lefty' from the 1997 film Donnie Brasco. Unbeknownst to Ross, Dominic Venegas had earlier crafted a similar drink called the 1794 at Range in San Francisco, using rye instead of bourbon and omitting bitters. Both recipes existed in the shadow of the Boulevardier, a classic cocktail invented roughly 80 years prior with bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth. The Left Hand has endured as a neo-classic, with its recipe widely published and known by bartenders globally, though its originality is questioned due to similarities with the Boulevardier. Ross's original specs use 0.75 ounces each of Campari and sweet vermouth, while variations adjust ratios for different serving styles. Key ingredients include bourbon with higher rye content, quality vermouth like Carpano Antica or Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, and Bitterman's Xocolatl Mole Bitters.
