The Krøyers: A Tale of Art, Love, and Divorce in Skagen
Marie and Peder Severin Krøyer, a couple of artists from the 19th and early 20th centuries, are celebrated for their painting skills despite facing significant marital challenges. Peder, who was much older, wed Marie (née Triepcke) in 1889, drawn to her striking beauty, which he captured in many of his works. Their relationship soured due to Peder's mental health struggles, leading to Marie's affair and their eventual divorce in 1905; Peder passed away four years later at the age of 58. Although Marie was gifted, she often felt overshadowed by Peder, a prominent figure among the Skagen Painters. She battled depression, yet achieved success in furniture design and architecture. After her divorce, she remarried, but that union also ended. Many of their artworks are housed in the Skagens Museum, and in 2012, director Bille August released a film titled 'Marie Krøyer' about their lives.
