The Kitchen Spring Gala Honors Catherine Gund, Garrett Bradley, Shari Frilot, Cheryl Dunye

The Kitchen, an innovative nonprofit, wrapped up New York Art Week with its yearly spring gala at City Winery, marking 55 years of leading performance art. Legacy Russell, the Executive Director and Chief Curator, paid tribute to the late Agnes Gund, recognizing her daughter Catherine Gund along with Garrett Bradley, Shari Frilot, and Cheryl Dunye. Introductions were made by T. Lax, Jacqueline Woodson, Tanya Selvaratnam, and Yolonda Ross. A video retrospective showcased Kitchen alumni such as Philip Glass, gala co-chair Laurie Anderson, and Bill T. Jones. The live performance featured rising artist keiyaA. Guests admired Bradley’s limited-edition print "in the palm of my hand," with proceeds benefiting The Kitchen. Dunye concluded with insights on her 1996 film "The Watermelon Woman," which, despite Congressional opposition, was included in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2021. "What they tried to kill is now canon," she stated.
