The Kitchen's Spring Gala Honors Catherine Gund, Garrett Bradley, Shari Frilot, Cheryl Dunye

The Kitchen, a pioneering nonprofit that has been integral to New York's performance art landscape for 55 years, wrapped up New York Art Week with its annual spring gala at City Winery. Legacy Russell, the Executive Director and Chief Curator, led a tribute to the late supporter Agnes Gund. The event honored her daughter, Catherine Gund, along with Garrett Bradley, Shari Frilot, and Cheryl Dunye, introduced by T. Lax, Jacqueline Woodson, and Yolonda Ross. A video montage showcased Kitchen alumni including Philip Glass, gala co-chair Laurie Anderson, and Bill T. Jones. Rising star keiyaA performed live, and attendees previewed Bradley's limited-edition print "in the palm of my hand." Proceeds benefit The Kitchen. Dunye concluded with thoughts on her 1996 film "The Watermelon Woman," which was added to the Library of Congress's National Film Registry in 2021 despite Congressional opposition. "What they tried to kill is now canon," she stated.
