The Expats on Air: Documentaries on Afro-Italian Creative Migrants

Johanne Affricot, founder of GRIOTmag, launches a web documentary series titled The Expats on Air, starting November 21 on the series website and GRIOT Italia's Facebook page. The series challenges the term 'expat,' which Affricot argues is reserved for white migrants, while people of color are labeled immigrants. Four 10-minute episodes, all shot in New York, profile Afro-Italian creatives working abroad. The first episode on November 21 features Sarah Ahimin, a Milan-born DJ and artist developer of Ivorian descent. On November 28, Zoe Beatwoman (Daniela Croci), a director and videographer from San Benedetto del Tronto, is profiled. December 5 presents Pierre Andre Diedhiou, a Roman of Haitian and Senegalese heritage who manages an Italian restaurant in New York and dreams of launching his streetwear brand HISU. The series concludes December 12 with Semhar Ghebrenegus Salvati, from Lucca of Eritrean origin, an account director at a creative agency. Some episodes will also air on Artribune Tv. Affricot founded GRIOTmag in 2015 as the first Italian blog (also in English) covering diversity through creativity. The series aims to provoke reflection on whether skin color determines belonging in Italian society.
