The Earth, the Fire, the Water and the Winds: A Museum of Wandering with Édouard Glissant at CARA, New York

exhibition · 2026-04-29

The exhibition 'The Earth, the Fire, the Water and the Winds: For a Museum of Wandering with Édouard Glissant' makes its U.S. debut at the Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA) in New York, after originating at the Instituto Tomie Ohtake in São Paulo. Curated by Manuela Moscoso with Marian Chudnovsky, and building on prior work by Ana Roman and Paulo Miyada, the show centers on the personal art collection of Martinican poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant (1928–2011), assembled over six decades. It includes works by artists such as Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Agustín Cárdenas, Antonio Seguí, and Enrique Zañartu, many of whom were friends and collaborators. The exhibition explores Glissant's concepts of errantry, Relation, opacity, and the Tout-Monde, and his unrealized project for a Musée Martiniquais des Arts des Amériques (M2A2) in Martinique. The New York iteration focuses on the historical depth and affinity networks of the collection, while the São Paulo version included additional contemporary artists and archival materials. The show is organized by Instituto Tomie Ohtake, MACTe – Mémorial ACTe (Guadeloupe), Edouard Glissant Art Fund (France/Martinique), and Institut du Tout-Monde (France). It runs through May 10, 2026.
