The Design Prize 2019 Winners Announced at Triennale Milano
The third edition of The Design Prize was held during Milan Design Week at Triennale Milano, with patronage from the City of Milan and partnership with the Order of Architects. Curated by Birgit Lohmann, editor-in-chief of Designboom, the prize awarded Golden Madonnina Awards in ceramic gold designed by Antonio Aricò across ten categories. The international scientific committee of 400 architects, designers, educators, curators, and artists nominated 900 projects, from which 30 finalists (three per category) were selected. The jury included Stefano Boeri, Bjarke Ingels, Neri & Hu, Dominique Perrault, Tomas Saraceno, Kazuyo Sejima, and Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn of Studio Drift. Winners included Warka Water (Social Impact), JINS (Distribution), Virgil Abloh (Communication), Tomas Saraceno (In The Artistic Realm), Freeing Architecture (Exhibition), Formafantasma (Experimentation), Andrés Jaque, Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli, Bregtje van der Haak, and Mirjan Varadinis for Manifesta 12 (Design Curator & Design Critic), Sabine Marcelis (Best Design Newcomer), Michael Anastassiades (Best Designer), and Philippe Starck (Lifetime Achievement). A special mention went to Forensic Architecture. The prize aims to celebrate creativity, innovation, and global design impact over the past 12 months.
