The Butterfly Affect Group Show at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo

The Butterfly Affect, a group exhibition at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, runs until 15 October 2023. Co-curated by Irene Calderoni and Bernardo Follini, the show features 11 international artists exploring the 'Butterfly Effect'—the idea that small actions can have large consequences, as posed by mathematician Edward Norton Lorenz in 1972. Works span painting, sculpture, installation, ceramics, and video, addressing themes such as desire, gender, the pharmaceuticals industry, race relations, and the conflict between communities over botanical resources. Notable pieces include Sharona Franklin's resin-encased hypodermic syringes and IV drips, Zoe Williams's glazed ceramic bust Algol's Maid (2021), Rachel Youn's kinetic sculptures of artificial plants on massage machines, Jumana Manna's video Foragers (2022) about Israeli nature protection laws affecting Palestinians, Isaac Julien's Dungeness (2008) paying tribute to Derek Jarman's garden, Patricia Domínguez's watercolours blending fairy-tale imagery with surveillance drones, Lungiswa Gqunta's barbed wire works, Sebastiano Impellizzeri's cartographic works referencing gay cruising grounds, and Jota Mombaça's installation Waterwill (2022) considering watery sensibilities and migration.
