The Broad Museum opens in Los Angeles with inaugural exhibition of 250+ works from the Broad collection

Last month, the Broad museum debuted in downtown Los Angeles, offering free access to the contemporary art collection of Edith and Eli Broad. The structure, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, features a unique 'veil-and-vault' design with a façade made of fiber-reinforced concrete. Situated on Grand Avenue, it is in proximity to LA MOCA and Frank Gehry's Disney Concert Hall. The opening exhibition, overseen by director Joanne Heyler, showcases more than 250 pieces from approximately 60 artists, presented in chronological order. Notable works include Ed Ruscha's Old Tech Chem Building and Blue Collar Tech Chem, Jeff Koons' Tulips, and Jasper Johns' Watchman. Critics contend that this chronological arrangement diminishes political narratives, favoring formal relationships over social and historical context.
