The Bridge program places music creators in Australian primary schools

other · 2026-05-19

The Bridge, a new initiative launched by The Song Room, a non-profit educational organization, places contemporary music creators in primary schools throughout Australia. This program seeks to enhance children's opportunities for music-making while also establishing career pathways for artists. Five creators—Ron Haryanto, Tom Eggert, Finn Pearson, Kye, and another known as trials—are engaged in paid placements lasting 10 weeks at schools including Green Square Public School (NSW), Redbank State School (QLD), Hallett Cove East Primary School (SA), Orelia Primary School (WA), and Darrang Primary School (VIC). Initiated in late April with backing from Creative Australia, CEO Alice Gerlach referenced Music Australia's The Bass Line report, which revealed that the average musician earns less than $15,000 from their craft. Although music is compulsory in Australian primary education, two-thirds of students do not have access to music education. The Bridge complements existing state initiatives like Victoria's Creative Learning Partnerships, which has facilitated 1,650 residencies and trained nearly 4,000 teachers over 40 years. Gerlach emphasizes the need for equity in arts education, asserting that 'not all education is equal.'
