The Box LA Closes After 19 Years as Experimental Art Space

institutional · 2026-04-28

After 19 years of operation, The Box LA, a gallery celebrated for its support of unconventional and non-commercial art, is set to close. Established in 2007 by Mara McCarthy in LA's Chinatown, the gallery later relocated to the Arts District. It functioned as an 'artist-formed space,' showcasing underappreciated artists from her father's era, such as Barbara T. Smith and Simone Forti, as well as newer talents like Naotaka Hiro and Marwa Abdul-Rahman. The final exhibition, a retrospective of Wally Hedrick in collaboration with Parker Gallery, concluded on April 4. A closing event on June 6 will include a fashion show featuring costumes by Johanna Went and Asher Hartman. Financial difficulties, exacerbated by the devastating Eaton Fire, prompted McCarthy's decision, though she remains committed to supporting artists in various ways. Sam Parker remarked on the significant loss this closure represents for Los Angeles.
