The Battle of Manila: WWII's Most Destructive Urban Conflict
The Battle of Manila (February 3 – March 3, 1945) was one of the most devastating urban battles of World War II, resulting in the near-total destruction of the city and the deaths of over 100,000 Filipino civilians. Manila, once a cosmopolitan hub, was ravaged by a combination of Japanese atrocities and American firepower. Japanese forces under Rear Admiral Sanji Iwabuchi, disobeying General Tomoyuki Yamashita's orders to withdraw, fortified the city with over 16,000 sailors and marines. American forces under General Douglas MacArthur, including the 37th Infantry Division, 1st Cavalry Division, and 11th Airborne Division, advanced from the north and south, engaging in brutal house-to-house fighting. The Japanese committed widespread atrocities, including massacres at Fort Santiago and Manila Cathedral, for which Yamashita was later executed. American artillery and flamethrowers leveled entire neighborhoods. The battle ended with Iwabuchi's suicide and the capture of Intramuros. Manila's reconstruction took years, and its legacy of urbicide remains.
