The Ark: 50+ Artists Fill Powerhouse Arts with Animal Sculptures

In Brooklyn, Powerhouse Arts showcases 'The Ark,' a significant group exhibition featuring more than 50 artists and 90 sculptures and installations focused on animals. Curated by Eric Fischl, the exhibit utilizes the biblical Deluge myth from Genesis as a lens to examine current environmental and social challenges. Initially displayed at The Church in Sag Harbor, a historic whaling town, the exhibition now fills the former warehouse of Powerhouse Arts, a nonprofit committed to fabrication and production, situated on the Gowanus Canal. Known as the 'Batcave,' the venue is next to a Superfund site identified by the Environmental Protection Agency, offering a post-industrial setting. Featured artists include Kiki Smith, Wangechi Mutu, and Maurizio Cattelan, with notable pieces such as Cattelan's pigeons and O'Reilly's emaciated dog.
