Thailand's Art Scene Embraces Archival Revival with Exhibitions and Awards

exhibition · 2026-04-19

Thailand's contemporary art scene is skillfully intertwining its past with future possibilities, highlighted by an influx of archival initiatives. In February, the Asia Art Archive unveiled an archive dedicated to Project 304, a key alternative art space from the 1990s co-founded by Gridthiya Gaweewong, who will receive the Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence in 2025. Following that, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre showcased "Chumpon Apisuk’s Lifeworld," an archive celebrating the work of Chumpon Apisuk, a trailblazer in performance art since the late 1980s. Moreover, the 100 Tonson Foundation's exhibition "The Same Old Karma" began documenting Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook’s impressive 45-year artistic journey, while her major solo show, "The Bouquet and the Wreath," debuted at MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai, featuring her new installation, Dog’s Palatial House. This survey also included a segment at Dubai's Jameel Arts Centre, marking her first solo showcase in the Middle East, all reflecting a growing enthusiasm for reinterpreting Thai art history through archives and exhibitions.
