Thailand Biennale 2023 Explores Syncretic Spirit Through Site-Specific Interventions in Chiang Rai

The third Thailand Biennale, titled 'The Open World,' is taking place in Chiang Rai province until April 30, 2023, across 17 locations and 13 pavilions. Curated by Gridthiya Gaweewong and Rirkrit Tiravanija, this event draws inspiration from a Buddha posture that represents openness, showcasing the work of 60 artists from the Global South. Notable pieces include Nguyễn Trinh Thi's sound sculpture at the Haw Kham pavilion, Ernesto Neto's 'Chantdance,' and Ryusuke Kido's reimagined rice barn. The Black House features works from four female artists, while the Chiang Rai International Art Museum displays 14 pieces. Additionally, MAIIAM's 'Point of No Concern' pavilion delves into themes of colonization, with various installations highlighting local culture and collaboration, showcasing Chiang Rai's cultural richness.
