Thai Artist's Family Publishes Unconventional Book Tied to Bangkok Exhibition

publication · 2026-04-20

Dusadee Huntrakul and his wife Pat coauthored a book titled 'Grandma, I Want a Penis,' published in Winter 2019 by ArtReview Asia. The publication coincided with Huntrakul's exhibition 'They Talk' at Bangkok City City Gallery, featuring his recent ceramic sculptures. The narrative draws from Pat's childhood memory of asking her grandmother to purchase a penis from a market so she could join her brothers' games. Decades later, after receiving a final call from her grandmother near Bull Rock Cave in Brno, Czech Republic, and witnessing her ghost, the couple conceived their son Prinn. The book blends this personal story with playful pencil illustrations created by Huntrakul, Pat, their one-year-old son Prinn, and a friend's five-year-old boy named Max. These drawings include childlike depictions and more sophisticated biomorphic figures with genitalia. Designed to function as both a children's book and an artist's book, it avoids simplistic Freudian interpretations while capturing a dinner-party anecdote's charm. The publication serves as an alternative for those who missed the Bangkok exhibition.
