Thaddaeus Ropac Opens Milan Gallery with Baselitz-Fontana Show
Thaddaeus Ropac has inaugurated its Milanese outpost at Palazzo Belgioioso, designed by Giuseppe Piermarini in 1772, with the exhibition 'L’aurora viene' (Dawn Comes). The show pairs Georg Baselitz (born 1938 in Kamens) and Lucio Fontana (1899–1968), exploring Fontana's profound influence on Baselitz. Works include a new monumental bronze sculpture by Baselitz in the courtyard, recent paintings with empty dark centers, and suspended figures. Fontana's pieces range from 1930s 'baroque' sculptures to Spatial Concepts, Cuts (Attese), and a rare 'Fine di Dio' (1963–64). Loans come from the Fondazione Lucio Fontana. The 400-square-meter space is Ropac's seventh location, joining London, Paris, Salzburg, and Seoul. Elena Bonanno di Linguaglossa directs the Milan branch. The next show will feature VALIE EXPORT and Ketty La Rocca.
