Thaddaeus Ropac Opens Fifth Gallery in London's Mayfair
Thaddaeus Ropac will open his fifth gallery space on April 28, 2017, at Ely House, a five-story, 1,500-square-meter building constructed in 1772 by architect Sir Robert Taylor, located at 37 Dover Street in London's Mayfair district. The restoration and conversion were led by Annabelle Selldorf of Selldorf Architects, who has previously designed spaces for David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, Gladstone Gallery, and Gagosian. The gallery is situated among major competitors including David Zwirner, Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Simon Lee, Massimo De Carlo, Tornabuoni, Ronchini, and Mazzoleni. Four inaugural exhibitions are planned: a video and photography show of Gilbert & George from the early 1970s; drawings and sculptures by Joseph Beuys from the 1950s and 1960s; a selection of Minimal Art works from the Marzona collection recently acquired by the gallery; and a solo show of young British artist Oliver Beer (born 1985) featuring sculptures and a performance. The gallery was founded in 1983 in Salzburg, opened its first Paris space in the Marais in 1990, and now operates two spaces in Salzburg, two in Paris (including a 5,000-square-meter industrial space in Pantin acquired in 2012), and the new London location. It represents over sixty international artists including Anselm Kiefer, Antony Gormley, Lawrence Weiner, and Georg Baselitz.
